They say you can’t choose your family, but that’s not strictly true; my brother chose Tebsy, who came all the way from America to join our family and I have to say he made a fabulous choice. It’s strange when your sibling gets married and all of a sudden there’s a new member in your family, carrying the same name and initials that were once just yours. And I suppose there’s a lot of luck involved in whether you get on, or whether she will just be your brother’s wife.
I’m lucky to be able to say that Tebsy has gone from stranger to sister-in-law and to friend in the space of a few years. It helps that she, like me, loves shoes and that she is ridiculously photogenic - which makes her ideal shooting material for some portraits.
When Toby (my brother) and Tebsy invited Mark and me to dinner, I suggested that I brought my new Canon 5D along to take a few pictures. I thought that would be enough of a warning for what was to come, but the look of alarm on my brother’s face as Mark unpacked the lights and soft boxes told me otherwise. Tebsy was completely up for being a guinea pig, but Toby required some convincing. I was surprised that he agreed, but I have no doubt that he thoroughly enjoyed himself… the camera never lies!
As for my Canon 5D – it was fabulous! I had a few teething problems – the external flash didn’t quite sync with the camera shutter – something for my lighting technician (that’s Mark) to work on. However, to my surprise, teamed with my new 85mm, 1.8 lens, the camera worked just fine in the low light and I could do without the flash altogether. Money well spent, I say - everyone’s just going to have to deal with having a big hug for Christmas this year!
